Britain's Top 100 Favourite Walks Archives

First shown in 2018, I watched Britain's Favourite Walks Top 100 today, presented by Julia Bradbury and Ore Oduba. This made great viewing for New Year's Day 2021 - a nice way to plan some walks for when we will be able to once the Covid-19 figures start to drop and we are allowed to travel to other places in Britain. Created in conjunction with Ordnance Survey maps, the Rambers and the National Trust, it's the result of a survey of over 8,000 walkers to their favourite walks. There's walks from all corners, from Cornwall and Kent up to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Britain's Favourite 100 walks 100 - Ramsgate to Margate Where are Ramsgate and Margate? - You can find Ramsgate and Margate, holder of the Best Seaside Town Award, on the East Kent coast. Distance - 8 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - beach and cliff top walks, Georgian architecture, beautiful Broadstairs beach - holiday hotspot of Charles Dickens. Sandy cove and chalk stacks of Botany Bay, where you may see local sand artist Ross Andrews. 99 - Oxford City Walk Where is Oxford? - Oxford is the County town of Oxfordshire and located 56 miles north west of London. It is home to the oldest university in Britain. Distance - 2.3 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - history and architecture, film buffs look out for familiar setting as 60 films set in Oxford. 98 - Richmond Park Where is Richmond Park? - Richmond Park is located in South West London, between Wimbledon and Twickenham. Distance - 6.9 miles perimeter walk Difficulty - Easy Good for - wildlife in a varied landscape - 2 breeds of deer live here, woodland, King Henry's Mound where legend has it that King Henry VIII was standing with third wife Jane Seymour, watching the Tower of London, when second wife Ann Boleyn was executed. 97 - Cave Hill Country Park & Belfast Castle Where is Cave Hill Country Park? - Cave Hill Country Park can be found to the north of Belfast, to the west of the M2 motorway in Northern Ireland. Distance - 4.5 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - caves, nature reserve, spectacular city views and castle. 96 - Nine Ladies Stone Circle Where is the Nine Ladies Stone Circle? - The Nine Ladies Stone Circle is a Bronze Age stone formation located in the Peak District, near the villages of Stanton Lees and Stanton in Peak. Distance - 3.1 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - stone circles 95 - Sperrin Mountains Where are the Sperrin Mountains? - The Sperrin Mountains are located 20 miles South East of Londonderry in Northern Ireland and are the largest mountain range in Northern Ireland. Distance - 4.5 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - caves, nature reserve, city views and castle, Beaghmore Stones Bronze Age circles. 94 - Falkirk Wheels to The Kelpies Where is the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies? - The Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies are two fantastic visitor attractions in Falkirk, 28 miles west of Edinburgh, and situated on the Forth and Clyde Canal. Distance - 4.1 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - canal walk, unique engineering attractions - the only rotating boat lift in the world, and the largest equine sculptures in the world, selfie trail linking the two. 93 - Durham Coastal Path Where is the Durham Coastal Path? - The Durham Coastal Path runs from Crimdon to Seaham, 11 miles along the North East coast. Distance - 11.2 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - designated National Nature Reserve to protect wildlife and nature, sea views. 92 - Gloucester & Sharpness Canal Where is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal? - The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal walk runs from the Roman city of Gloucester to the port of Sharpness on the River Severn in South West England. When it was built in the 1800's it was the broadest and deepest canal in the world. Distance - 15.9 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - spectacular views of the River Severn, the Forest of Dean, and the Cotswolds. 91 - Worcester & Birmingham Canal Where is the Worcester & Birmingham Canal? - Birmingham is the major city in the West Midlands, with Worcester located 30 miles South West. Distance - 31.1 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - canal walks, city centre, green hills, history of the Industrial Revolution. 90 - Regent's Canal Where is the Regent's Canal? - The Regent's Canal runs through North London from Little Venice, through Regent's Park, down to the River Thames. Distance - 9 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - peace within the city centre, canal path, London attractions, thriving outdoor eateries and market at Camden Lock. 89 - Rye to Camber Sands Where are Rye and Camber Sands? The mediaeval town of Rye and Camber Sands are located on the East Sussex Coast. Distance - 10.8 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - quaint coastal village, nature reserve with sighting of over 300 rare and endangered birds, Winchelsea Beach and Mary Stanford lifeboat house, a tribute to 17 men who lost their lives at sea in November 1928, Rye Harbour, vast beach and sand dunes at Camber, where George Clooney's film The Monument's Men was filmed (as was Carry On Follow That Camel). 88 - Falls of Clyde Where are the Falls of Clyde? - The Falls of Clyde are located 30 miles South East of Glasgow, on the Clyde River in Larnarkshire. Distance - 6.5 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - ancient woodland, widlife - look out for badgers, otters and several species of bat, stunning waterfalls. 87 - Amesbury to Stonehenge Where is Stonehenge? - Stonehenge is the most famous of all the stone circles in the United Kingdom, and is located 2 miles west of Amesbury in Wiltshire. Distance - 6.4 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - approach the stones via The Avenue, the procession route used 5,000 years ago. 86 - Pendle Hill Witches Trail Where is Pendle Hill? - Pendle Hill is located north of Burnley in Lancashire, and is famous for the witch trials of 1612, where 10 local women were sentenced to death for being witches. Distance - 6.9 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - history of witchcraft, village life, Alice Nutter statue at Roughlee, moorlands beneath Pendle Hill. 85 - Bradgate Park Where is Bradgate Park? - Bradgate Park is located 6 miles north west of Leicester, and was the birthplace of Lady Jane Grey in 1537. It is 850 acres and home to 400 deer. Distance - 10.6 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - woodland walks, free roaming deer. 84 - Cambridge Colleges Walk Where is Cambridge? - Cambridge is the County town of Cambridgeshire and located 60 miles north of London. Distance - 4.7 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - historical walks among University colleges, churches and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Spot people punting on the River Cam. 83 - Clifton Suspension Bridge Where is the Clifton Suspension Bridge? The Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the River Avon in the city of Bristol, and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864. Distance - 6.7 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - walk both over and under the bridge, SS Great Britain, Georgian architecture. 82 - Another Place, Crosby Beach Where is Crosby Beach? - Crosby Beach is in Southport, 5 miles from Liverpool, and is home to Another Place, 100 statues on the beach installed in 2005 by internationally acclaimed artist Antony Gormley. Distance - 5.1 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - art and sculpture fans, beach and sea views, sand dunes. 81 - Skipton to Saltaire on Leeds/Liverpool Canal Where are Skipton and Saltaire? - both Skipton, North Yorkshire, and Saltaire, West Yorkshire, are towns on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, the longest canal in Britain. Distance - 15.9 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - canal walk, famous for Bingley Five-Rise locks, Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 80 - White Cliffs of Dover to Deal Where are the White Cliffs of Dover? - The White Cliffs of Dover, as featured in the Vera Lynn song from 1942, are located on the Kent coast facing the Strait of Dover and the French coast. Distance - 9.8 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - as well as the iconic landmark and sea views, this walk also features great wildlife and one of Henry VIII's 16th century castles. 79 - Cannock Chase Where is Cannock Chase? - Cannock Chase is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, located between Lichfield and Stafford in the West Midlands. Distance - 11.9 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - woodlands, open heathland, wildlife - home to 45 rare species of birds. 78 - The Stiperstones to The Devil's Chair Where are The Stiperstones? - The Stiperstones National Nature Reserve is near the English/Welsh border in the Shropshire Hills AONB. Distance - 4.7 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - quartzile rocky tors, Peregrine falcons. 77 - Flatford and Constable Country Where is Flatford? - Flatford is a town in the Dedham Vale AONB and just to the west of the mouth of the River Stour in Suffolk. It is the birthplace of 18th Century artist John Constable, and the are surround the village is the inspiration for his masterpices. Distance - 7 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - landscape that inspired artist John Constable. 76 - Devil's Punch Bowl Where is the Devil's Punch Bowl? - The Devil's Punch Bowl is a 697 acre Site of Special Scientific Interest east of the village of Hindhead in Surrey. Distance - 3.4 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - amazing natural amphitheatre packed full of wildlife including rare beetles and butterflies. 75 - Great Missenden Where is Great Missenden? - Great Missenden is a picturesque village in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, and was home to children's author, Roald Dahl. Distance - 9.5 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - spotting the inspiration of Dahl's stories, Angling Spring wood where Dahl is known to have walked, Coombe Hill where you can see the Prime Minister's country retreat Chequers where Winston Churchill wrote some of his famous speeches. 74 - St Mary's, Isles of Scilly Where are the Isles of Scilly? - The Isles of Scilly are a group of islands 25 miles off the south western tip of Cornwall, of which St Mary's is the largest island. Distance - 9.8 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - round island coastal walk, Area of Natural Beauty, wildlife, viewing tower, lighthouse and rocks at Peninnis Head, white sand beaches. 73 - Broadway Tower What is Broadway Tower? - Broadway Tower is a 20 metre high folly standing on Broadway Hill, the second highest point in the Cotswolds, outside the beautiful town of Broadway. Distance - 4.2 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - views over Worcestershire all the way to Wales, the tower was designed by Capability Brown and was home to artists William Morris and Edward Burne Jones. 72 - Leith Hill Where is Leith Hill? - Leith Hill in Surrey is the highest point in South East England, and is located between Guildford and Crawley. Distance - 33.8 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - Delamere Forest, the largest woodland in Cheshire, Beeston Castle, and historic market towns. 69 - The Bronte Waterfall and Top Withens Where is The Bronte Way? - The Bronte Way sets off from Haworth in Yorkshire and reaches Top Withens, farmhouse ruins thought to inspire Wuthering Heights. Distance - 2 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - beautiful beach and crystal clear water, film location for Burt Lancaster's Local Hero. 64 - The Great Glen Way Where is The Great Glen Way? - The Great Glen Way is a coast to coast walk that runs from Fort William to Inverness. Distance - 74.1 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness. 63 - Thames Path (Thames Barrier to Putney Bridge) Where does the Thames Path run? - The source of the River Thames Kemble, in Gloucestershire, is the start point of the Thames Path, which runs 184 miles to the Thames Barrier at Charlton in London. Brockenhurst is the largest populated village in the New Forest in Hampshire, 13 miles south west of Southampton. Where is the North Antrim Coast Path? - The North Antrim Coast Path runs for 40 miles from Portstewart Strand to Murlough Bay in Northern Ireland. Distance - 7.8 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - River Garry and Highland village, Blair Castle where ITV series Victoria was partly filmed, starring Jenna Coleman as a young Queen Victoria. 37 - The Malvern Hills Where are The Malvern Hills? - The Malvern Hills are a range of hills covering parts of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Distance - 5.5 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - beautiful countryside that inspired poets John Drinkwater and WH Auden, 425 metre high Worcestershire Beacon. 36 - Ingleton Falls Where are Ingleton Falls? - Ingleton Falls is a waterfall trail in North Yorkshire and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Distance - 4.3 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - multiple spectacular waterfalls including Pecker Falls, rare birds, plants and trees. 35 - Stanage Edge Where is Stanage Edge? - Stanage Edge is an escarpment in Derbyshire, in the Peak District, a couple of miles north of Hathersage. Distance - 4.4 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - panoramic views of the Peak District, easier ascent than some other hills in The Peak District, former millstone quarry, Robin Hoods cave. 34 - High Force, Low Force What are High Force and Low Force - High Force and Low Force are two waterfalls along the River Tees, in the Durham Dales. Distance - 8.6 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - rugged walk, waterfalls. 33 - The Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye Where are The Fairy Pools? - The Fairy Pools are found on the Isle of Skye, near Glenbrittle, at the bottom of the Black Cuillin Mountains. Distance - 4.5 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - spectacular waterfalls, challenging mountain hiking. 32 - Anglesey Coastal Path Where is Anglesey? - Anglesey is an island off the North West Wales coast - it is connected to Wales by the Pont Menai suspension bridge. Distance - 4.8 miles Difficulty - Moderate Good for - beautiful unique views, 19th century fort, Cold War rocket site, memorial to Alfred, Lord Tennyson. 28 - Rhossili, Gower Peninsular Where is Rhossili? - Rhossili is on the Gower Peninsular, in the South of Wales, 18 miles west of Swansea. Distance - 7.3 miles Difficulty - Easy Good for - history, mythology, beaches and sparkling clean water, Worms Head. 27 - The Coffin Route, Ambleside to Grasmere Where is The Coffin Route? - The Coffin Route runs from Ambleside to the consecrated ground at St Oswald's in Grasmere, in the Lake District.
